One thing that was made clear to me, and that I already knew but was just confirmed tenfold, is that Andrew McMahon is a beautiful person, and here’s why:

During his Manchester show, a girl in the front row fainted. As soon as he realized this, he stopped his show, leaped out of his chair and leaned down into the audience to check on the girl. He was genuinely concerned and you could tell. He asked her if she was okay, gave her one of his bottles of water, and told her she should probably get out of the front row. When she chose not to, he was totally fine with it, and told her to let him know if she’s feeling bad again. When the girl decided to leave the front row a song or so later, he thought she “went down” again - he was actually LOOKING for her, to make sure she was still okay.
After the London show, we were waiting for him for well over an hour in the cold. The Union Chapel staff told us he was at the bar. Which I took in stride, this is Andrew after all and it didn’t surprise me he went to get a drink or two to unwind after the show. When he finally got out through the backstage entrance, he was so busy thanking the Union Chapel staff for a good evening, that he didn’t even see us there, standing in a very long and surprisingly orderly line waiting for him. When he did notice us, he went “Oh God”. He then put his hand on my shoulder (I was first in line, don’t ask me how I managed it, I still don’t know), looked me straight in the eyes and told me he’s going to drop off his bag and come back. To which all I could mutter was “yeah, sure”. Inside I was screaming because Andrew McMahon just made eye contact and engaged in physical contact and oh God oh God oh God. When he came back moments later he thanked us for waiting, and apologized that he took so long, all the while putting his hand on my arm again. Now, I usually get freaked out when people touch me. I don’t even hug my own friends. But when he touched me, his touch was so respectful, that I didn’t mind one bit. It was a friendly sort of touch, like we’re old chums. He then proceeded to sign what we gave him to sign, and when I told him I came all the way from Israel to see him, he looked up at me with wide eyes, and told me he remembered seeing my message on Instagram the day before telling him I was from Israel and came to the Manchester show and loved it. I was so stoked that he saw the message and remembered. He thanked me for coming all this way, and I told him he made it worth it. I thanked him for a great show, and for playing Watch The Sky (he didn’t in Manchester) and we wondered together if it was me who asked him to play it or not. At that moment I was pretty sure it wasn’t me, but I couldn’t remember for sure because, hello! I was talking to my hero. He seemed happy nevertheless that it made me happy that he played it. When we took a picture together, the girl who took my picture dallied a bit, and for a few moments Andrew had his hand around me and I had mine around him, and he stooped a bit so he won’t tower over me and I was thinking “GOSH DARN IT YOU’RE SO ADORABLE”. And I didn’t mind one bit that a strange man had his arm around me because he didn’t feel like a stranger to me. Listening to his music for years, I felt like I knew him in a way. And me, I hate taking pictures of myself. And I always hate the way I look in pictures. And I never genuinely smile in pictures. And I definitely don’t put pictures of me on the internet but this was an exception because I love the way I look next to him. I’m radiating with joy in the picture because this is how I felt, and it shows. We then left, because there was still a long line behind us, and Andrew wished us (me and the German girl I befriended in line) “safe travels” and I couldn’t have asked for more. In the short while we had with him, Andrew made me feel special and important. He seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say, and he constantly made eye and light-and-respectful physical contact, really engaging in the encounter. This all helped, because I was nervous to meet him, but he instantly made it all go away when he first put his hand on my shoulder and looked into my eyes. And for that, he is beautiful. Because this is how he makes his fans feel. Because he seemed genuinely grateful to have us all there. Also - would you look at that pretty sweater!

Did you know that most of this scene wasn’t scripted and Robin Williams just did it and the animators had a hard time creating the animation for this? Robin is a motherfucking genius.

Tonight I saw Andrew McMahon play live (that’s my photo above) and I waited 7 years for it. Most of you might not know him by name but if I mention Jack’s Mannequin or Something Corporate you’ll know he’s the lead singer for both…

I have never been to such an intimate gig ever, it was so perfect and just flawless. Andrew’s such an inspiration and he’s always been one of my role models because he showed that as long as you have hope, you can get through anything… as events from his life show us. I know this is one of those typical ‘THAT BAND SAVED MY LIFE’ thing but I guess it’s true. His music, his lyrics, his film, his presence, his attitude towards life, everything to do with him just helps. And I am so grateful that I finally got the chance to see him. Just keep your head above, swim.
